CRISIS RESPONSE UPDATE:
GPFA has launched its Agricultural Rehabilitation Program to assist victims of the summer’s devastating floods. Despite a dearth of media coverage, 11 central and eastern provinces of Afghanistan have experienced major destruction from flooding.
Farmers have lost their homes, animals, and crops. Roads and bridges have washed away. Orchards and fields have been covered in sandy silt and rocks. Trees have been uprooted. In one district in Kabul province, more than 60 karez – the irrigation canals farmers use to water their crops – were destroyed. Entire harvests have been lost.
Relief aid is being dispersed, but without action now many Afghan families will have no means of support for years. The harsh, imminent winter is a ticking clock on efforts to rebuild.
GPFA staff are heading into the field…
To clean and repair karez
To clear and restore orchards covered in silt
To replant woodlots and irrigate damaged nurseries
To disperse tools and planting materials
To dispense advice on reconstruction
“This is an important opportunity for the development of agriculture in Afghanistan,” Executive Director Roger Hardister says, “It is possible to regenerate many of these villages with improved, faster-growing crops.”
“But GPFA urgently needs support to spearhead these efforts.”
Please consider an emergency contribution to GPFA’s Agricultural Rehabilitation Program.
