Global Partnership for Afghanistan (GPFA) is a fast-growing, dynamic New York nonprofit organization and NGO registered in Afghanistan. Since 2004, it has engaged in community-based development programs working with Afghan farmers to restore their fruit and nut orchards, vineyards, woodlots, and forests and develop profitable forestry and horticulture farm enterprises that will increase incomes, jobs, food supply and provide environmental and health benefits. GPFA has administrative offices in New York City and Kabul with sub-offices in 4 Afghan provinces (expanding this year to 7), with a staff of 2 in New York and soon to be more than 80 in Afghanistan. The Executive Director is based in the Kabul Office.
Position Summary
The Development Director directs and coordinates the solicitation of funds via direct mail, individual donor meetings, grant applications, and special events and oversees public relations. We are looking for an outgoing, self-starter who can partner with our dynamic executive director and staff in growing GPFA's funding base. Working closely with the Executive Director, to whom the position reports, the Development Director is responsible for developing and implementing annual fundraising/marketing plans to meet this organization's 2008 projected expenditures of $1.5 million and anticipated larger budgets in 2009 and beyond.
Duties & Responsibilities:
FundraisingAdministration / Program
- Major gifts: Conduct ongoing solicitation of major gifts via personalized letters, phone calls and personal visits, coordinated with members of Board of Directors. Oversee development and implementation of annual calendar of cultivation activities that educate donors about Afghanistan and GPFA's programs. Write appeals, acknowledgement letters and other fundraising communications to donors and prospects.
- Major gift prospects: Compile and analyze information about prospective donors; design outreach strategies to engage prospects in understanding and supporting GPFA's work.
- Events: Conduct special events to generate donor interest and solicit funds, including coordination of host committee, program, ticket sales and budget. Specifically, oversee one annual New York event with a net profit of at least $150,000 and two additional outreach events in major cities.
- Grants: Research, plan and oversee implementation of a strategy for soliciting significant foundation and corporate grants. Prepare grant proposals with other staff. Work with Executive Director and staff in developing and drafting government and agency grant proposals.
- Direct Mail: Assess and oversee development and implementation of direct mail and online programs to raise awareness and funds from individual donors.
- Donor Communications: Oversee design and publication of semi-annual or more frequent newsletters and annual report and periodic updates to donors, prospects and key contacts and assist in program reports to government and agency donors.
Public Relations / Marketing
- Assist Executive Director and Staff in preparing and editing program reports and other publications.
- Evaluate and report quarterly to the Board on the effectiveness and implementation of GPFA's fundraising and marketing programs.
- Oversee maintenance of donor data base and ensure timely acknowledgment of gifts.
- Ensure compliance with laws applicable to fundraising.
- Recommend fundraising policies, procedures and programs to Executive Director and document changes in existing policies and procedures.
- Recruit and supervise volunteers to assist with fundraising and marketing functions
- Oversee development and implementation of public relations/marketing campaign to promote organization via press releases, advertising, targeted dissemination of literature, other means.
- Oversee updates, design changes to, and effectiveness of GPFA website and other online activities.
